Understanding Disaster Risks in East Java and Their Health Impacts

East Java’s location on the Pacific Ring of Fire exposes it to frequent seismic activity and volcanic eruptions. Mount Semeru, for instance, has shown recent periods of heightened activity, posing a significant threat to surrounding communities. Heavy rainfall also leads to devastating floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions. These events can cause widespread injury, illness, and death, overwhelming the healthcare system’s capacity. The destruction of infrastructure, including hospitals and medical facilities, further complicates the provision of essential services. Infectious diseases, such as waterborne illnesses, are also a common consequence of disasters, posing a major public health challenge.
